How to read the results

Double clicks: a worn switch bounces, sending two clicks for one press. Intervals under ~80 ms almost never come from a human finger — if you see red entries while clicking normally, the switch (usually the left one) is failing. On many mice the switch can be replaced; some brands cover this under warranty.

Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position: common values are 125 Hz (office mice), 500 Hz, and 1000 Hz (gaming mice). Browsers may coalesce events, so treat the peak value as your mouse's rate — sustained lower numbers are normal. 4K/8K polling mice will read lower here than their true rate because of browser limits.

Back/Forward buttons (M4/M5) may be intercepted by the browser or OS on some setups even when the buttons work fine in games.

Why mice start double-clicking on their own

Under the left button sits a mechanical microswitch rated for tens of millions of clicks. As its spring contact ages (or oxidizes), one press produces a burst of on-off transitions faster than the mouse firmware's debounce window, and the computer sees two clicks. It's the single most common mouse failure, and it's why the test above flags intervals under 80 ms — human fingers essentially can't double-click that fast. Fix ladder: check for a firmware/software debounce setting (some gaming brands expose one), claim warranty if in period — this defect is widely honored — or replace the switch itself: a few dollars and one solder joint, and many repair shops do it same-day. Optical-switch mice avoid the problem entirely by design.

Does polling rate matter?

Polling rate is how often the mouse reports to the computer: 125 Hz means a report every 8 ms, 1000 Hz every 1 ms. For office work the difference is imperceptible; for fast aiming, 500–1000 Hz gives visibly smoother tracking and up to ~7 ms less input lag versus 125 Hz. Diminishing returns kick in hard above 1000 Hz — and browsers coalesce events, so this page can confirm "office-class vs gaming-class" reliably but will under-read 4K/8K mice. If a gaming mouse reads 125 Hz here, check its software: many ship at 125 Hz by default to save battery.

Scroll wheel skipping or jumping back?

The wheel turns a small rotary encoder, and like stick potentiometers it wears: symptoms are skipped notches, or the page jumping up briefly while scrolling down. Watch the up/down counters above while scrolling one direction slowly — any counts in the wrong direction confirm encoder wear. Compressed air through the wheel slot helps mild cases; beyond that, encoder replacement is the same difficulty class as a switch swap.
